Jakarta is the largest city in South East Asia and the capital of Indonesia with a population of about 10 million on 662 square km. Before Dutch colonial era, Jakarta has name Sunda Kelapa and was part of the Kingdom of Sunda with Pakuan (now Bogor) was the capital of the Kingdom. Sunda Kelapa was the most important harbour in Java. There were many spice and rice trading here, and also were exported to Europe. On June, 22nd 1527, Fatahillah from Demak kingdom (located on Central Java) attacked Sunda Kelapa and changed the name of the area into Jayakarta, it means “glory” or “win”. Under the Dutch colonial era, it was named as Batavia. After Japanese occupation and after Indonesia proclaimed its independence on August 17th 1945, the name of the city became Jakarta, the short name of Jayakarta.
