Jakarta is a historic city. By reading the timeline on this tee, you will learn the name change of Jakarta time by time. The city was the main port in Java, named Sunda Kelapa (or Sunda Kalapa), which means coconut of Sunda (West Java). The port was part of Sunda Kingdom.

On 22nd June 1527, Fatahillah and his soldiers from Demak and Cirebon attacked Portuguese that colonized the port. Fatahillah won and renamed the port to Jayakarta, means the glorious city. Now, every 22nd June, Jakarta celebrate its aniversary.

In the early 17th century, Dutch East Indies Company (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie or VOC) arrived in Java and established a trading post in Jayakarta. In 1619, VOC, which was backed up by modern military, destroyed the city and built a new company town named Batavia.

During World War 2, Japan took over the city because Dutch formally surrendered to Japan in 1942. Japan then renamed back the city to Djakarta (old spelling of Jakarta). It is the short name of Jayakarta. The area had Japanese official name: Jakaruta tokubetsu-shi, or Special Municipality of Jakarta. The name of Jakarta is remain until now. But it is actually not a city but a province named Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta or the Special Capital Region of Jakarta.
